NEW WORKFLOW INTEGRATION INCLUDING INVISALIGN INTEROPERABILITY WITH CEREC OMNICAM


For those of you who are Invisalign providers and own a CEREC system instead of an iTero, here is good news from the IDS meeting last week in Germany...

COLOGNE, GERMANY and SAN JOSE, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 03/10/15 -- Align Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: ALGN) today announced that Sirona's CEREC Omnicam can be used for Invisalign® case submissions, which require an intraoral scanner that can readily capture a full arch digital impression. This enables Invisalign providers with a CEREC Omnicam intraoral camera and the new CEREC Ortho Software 1.1 to submit a digital impression in place of a traditional PVS impression as part of the Invisalign case submission process. This new CEREC Ortho software is expected to be rolled out in the summer of 2015.

The CEREC Omnicam is the second third-party scanner that has been qualified for use with Invisalign treatment. Align Technology's own iTero® scanner was qualified for Invisalign case submission in December 2011. Align Technology supports an open systems approach to digital impressions and continues to work with intraoral scanning companies interested in developing interoperability and chair-side applications for use with Invisalign treatment.

INDEPENDENT CLINICAL STUDY FINDS THE CANARY SYSTEM TO BE SUPERIOR TO BITEWING RADIOGRAPHY

Toronto, Canada - New clinical research findings were announced last week in Boston at the International Association of Dental (IADR) Research General Session. Dr. Ben Amaechi from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, who led an independent clinical study, found The Canary System® to exhibit superior performance compared to bitewing radiography for the detection of proximal caries.
Thirty subjects from a mixed population of caries risk patients were involved in the study. The authors of the study found the sensitivity/specificity of The Canary System to be 0.92/0.78 versus 0.67/0.54 for bitewing radiography. The authors of the study concluded that The Canary System is more accurate than bitewing radiography for proximal caries diagnosis.
“Bitewing radiographs and visual examination have been considered the gold standard for caries detection but this study along with others demonstrate that The Canary System should become the next gold standard for the detection and monitoring of tooth decay”, said Dr. Stephen Abrams, President of Quantum Dental Technologies Inc, the manufacturer of The Canary System.

Parents have harder time getting kids to brush than to eat vegetables

Delta Dental provides tips to motivate kids to brush and floss

Nearly half of parents (45 percent) say getting kids to brush their teeth is one of the most challenging things to get their kids to do. That’s slightly higher than getting children to eat vegetables regularly (42 percent) or getting their help with household chores (41 percent). Forty-one percent of parents also said it was a challenge to get their kids to floss their teeth regularly.
Therefore, it’s not surprising most parents think their children’s oral health isn’t as good as it could be because they don’t brush (52 percent) or floss (38 percent) often enough. Almost a third (32 percent) of parents admit that their children’s teeth are brushed just once a day or less often, and a majority (61 percent) report their child’s teeth are flossed less often than once a day.

“At some point, most parents will struggle with getting their children to brush and floss. Until they are a little older, it’s hard for kids to understand the importance of oral health,” says Dr. Bill Kohn, DDS, Delta Dental Plans Association’s vice president of dental science and policy. “If parents make sure children’s teeth are brushed and flossed from a very young age, it becomes part of the routine without question.”

Parents are working to get on the right track, however, according to the survey. Fifty-eight percent of parents have specifically made oral hygiene a routine in their homes, and 31 percent have asked other family members to enforce good oral health habits. As far as their strategies to encourage good habits, parents are more likely to give rewards for good behavior (53 percent) than punish bad behavior (16 percent) to get their children to take care of their teeth.
Delta Dental provides some positive ways to make brushing and flossing an easier item on the to-do list.

Be a role model. Kids love to imitate their parents. So when they are young, make dental care a family activity by brushing and flossing in front of and with children. Among parents who have taken recent action to improve their children’s oral health, nearly four in 10 (39 percent) are already doing this by brushing their teeth at the same time as their kids do. During family brushing time, reverse roles and let your child brush your teeth. It’s fun for them and demonstrates the correct way to brush.t rmember, do not share a toothbrush.

Reward good oral health. More than half of parents (53 percent) say rewarding kids for good behavior would be the best way to get them more excited about improving oral health. Create a chart that keeps track of daily oral health habits and reward kids for consistently completing tasks.   

Call in reinforcements: For parents whose children stubbornly neglect to brush or floss, maybe it's time to change the messenger. Call the dental office before the next checkup and let them know what's going on. The same motivational message might be better received if it comes from a third party, like the dentist.

American Academy of Periodontology Publishes Proceedings from 2014 Workshop on Regeneration



Clinical recommendations and practical application reports available in Journal of Periodontology, Clinical Advances in Periodontics

CHICAGO (February 27, 2015)–The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) has released the official proceedings from its June 2014 workshop on regenerative therapies for periodontal disease. Systematic reviews and consensus reports from the “Enhancing Periodontal Health through Regenerative Approaches” workshop are published in a supplement to the February 2015 edition of the Journal of Periodontology. Practical application reports, intended to guide dental professionals in the application of periodontal regeneration in the clinical setting, are available in the February 2015 issue Clinical Advances in Periodontics.

Fifty-two workshop participants met in Chicago last summer to conduct a systematic review of existing literature, culminating in the development of consensus reports and practical applications to aid practitioners in the clinical environment. Topics of the workshop included the following:
·       Periodontal Soft Tissue Root Coverage Procedures: Managing gingival recession based on current evidence with a primary outcome goal of complete root coverage
·       Periodontal Soft Tissue Non-Root Coverage Procedures: Assessing the need for gingival augmentation procedures (non-root coverage) around natural teeth
·       Intrabony Defects: Periodontal regenerative strategies for the management of intrabony periodontal defects
·       Furcation Defects: How periodontal furcation defects should be managed via periodontal regenerative therapy and what parameters should be used for treatment selection
·       Emerging Regenerative Approaches for Periodontal Reconstruction: Can emerging technologies for periodontal regeneration become clinical reality?
The practical application reports provide the unique component of the workshop. Each practical application paper describes a specific clinical situation, different approaches that may be considered in its management, and how to make treatment decisions based on the provided evidence. Clinical Advances in Periodontics also offers illustrative images and videos that further detail the clinical situation, how it was managed, and its expected treatment outcomes.

The workshop was spearheaded by an AAP-designated organizing committee, co-chaired by William Giannobile, DDS, MS, DMSc, and Pamela McClain, DDS. The American Academy of Periodontology Foundation, Geistlich Pharma North America, Colgate-Palmolive, and the Osteology Foundation partnered with the AAP to provide support of the workshop’s programming.
The AAP regularly organizes consensus workshops on issues surrounding the science and practice of periodontics. Past sessions include the 2010 Workshop on Inflammation and a 2012 joint session with the European Federation of Periodontology on periodontal disease and systemic diseases.

exocad design software is compatible with Carestream Dental’s CS 3500 intraoral scanner, which allows practitioners to easily acquire true color, 2D and 3D images. Requiring no external heater or trolley system, the CS 3500 features high-angulation scanning of up to 45 degrees and to a depth from -2 to +13mm. Additionally, the CS 3500 uses open-format STL files for easy sharing and can be plugged directly into a computer’s USB—making it a truly portable scanner option. The integration with exocad benefits practices that wish to incorporate digital impressions and easy collaboration with labs into their workflow.
