Enamel remineralization effect of a dentifrice containing calcium sodium phosphosilicate: an optical coherence tomography observation.

OBJECTIVE:The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a dentifrice containing 5% calcium sodium phosphosilicate (CSP) on the remineralization of the enamel using optical coherence tomography (OCT).
MATERIALS AND METHODS:Bovine incisors were sliced and shaped in a rectangular form. One group of five specimens was treated with undersaturated 0.1 M lactic acid buffer solution (pH 4.75) for 10 min and then placed in artificial saliva (pH 7.0) (De group). Other specimens were stored in solutions of toothpaste containing CSP for 10 min, followed by 10-min immersion in the lactic acid buffer solution twice a day before storage in artificial saliva (CSP group). An additional group was stored in only artificial saliva (control group). OCT imaging on the selected location of the enamel surface was performed. The peak intensity and width at 1/e2 were recorded in each of the six areas on the sample and averaged, and the sample size of each group was six. The integrated value in units (dB × μm) was calculated in the area of peak intensity. The data for each group was subjected to one-way repeated-measures ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests (α = 0.05).
RESULTS:The changes in integrated values of each group were different. A slight but significant increase in the integrated value was observed in the control group, whereas a slight but significant decrease in the value was observed the De group. Integrated values increased in the CSP group.
CONCLUSIONS:Remineralization occurred upon immersion in the toothpaste containing CSP.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) has been reported to have a positive effect on periodontal wound healing following nonsurgical and surgical therapy. However, to date, a few basic in vitro studies have been reported to investigating the potential of HA on human periodontal ligament (PDL) cell regeneration. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of HA on PDL cell compatibility, proliferation, and differentiation in vitro.
Either non-cross-linked (HA_ncl) or cross-linked (HA_cl) HA was investigated. Human PDL cells were seeded in 7 conditions as follows (1) Control tissue culture plastic (TCP) (2) dilution of HA_ncl (1:100), (3) dilution of HA_ncl (1:10), 4) HA_ncl directly coated onto TCP, (5) dilution of HA_cl (1:100), 6) dilution of HA_cl (1:10) and (7) HA_cl directly coated onto TCP. Samples were then investigated for cell viability using a live/dead assay, an inflammatory reaction using real-time PCR and ELISA for MMP2, IL-1 and cell proliferation via an MTS assay. Furthermore, the osteogenic potential of PDL cells was assessed by alkaline phosphatase(ALP) activity, collagen1(COL1) and osteocalcin(OCN) immunostaining, alizarin red staining, and real-time PCR for genes encoding Runx2, COL1, ALP, and OCN.
Both HA_ncl and HA_cl showed high PDL cell viability (greater than 90%) irrespective of the culturing conditions. Furthermore, no significant difference in both mRNA and protein levels of proinflammatory cytokines, including MMP2 and IL-1 expression was observed. Both diluted HA_ncl and HA_cl significantly increased cell numbers compared to the controlled TCP samples at 3 and 5 days. HA_ncl and HA_cl in standard cell growth media significantly decreased ALP staining, COL1 immunostaining and down-regulated early osteogenic differentiation, including Runx2, COL1, and OCN mRNA levels when compared to control samples. When osteogenic differentiation medium (ODM) was added, interestingly, the expression of early osteogenic markers increased by demonstrating higher levels of COL1 and ALP expression; especially in HA 1:10 diluted condition. Late stage osteogenic markers remained inhibited.
Both non-cross-linked and cross-linked HA maintained high PDL cell viability, increased proliferation, and early osteogenic differentiation. However, HA was consistently associated with a significant decrease in late osteogenic differentiation of primary human PDL cells. Future in vitro and animal research is necessary to further characterize the effect of HA on periodontal regeneration.

Contribution Will Provide Complete Dental Care Facility for
the Organization’s New Location
Malvern, PA (January 10, 2017) – For its latest philanthropic endeavor, DentalEZ®, a supplier of integrated products and services for dental health professionals worldwide, recently donated a full shipment of dental supplies and equipment to Project Chimps, a rescue organization dedicated to the lifetime sanctuary care of hundreds of captive chimpanzees.
Specifically, the Company donated various dental products, and operatory and utility room equipment to Project Chimps’ new northern Georgia sanctuary including NevinLabs™ steel cabinets, DentalEZ® delivery units and operatory lights, StarDental® handpieces, and RAMVAC vacuums and compressors. Because of the Company’s generous donation, the new dental facility will now have all components needed for complete and optimal dental care of the rescued animals.
Peter Volk, Territory Sales Manager for DentalEZ is heading the mission along with Southern Region Manager, Chuck Seeger, and Jason Hodkowski, Senior Institutional Sales Manager. The team is currently working with the company to create the dental facility. “It is interesting because as dental professionals our focus is almost always on our human patients,” remarked Volk. “What most people don’t think about is that all of the animals that they only see on Animal Planet or at the zoo need dental care. Once in a captive environment these animals need to receive all of the preventive care that we humans are accustomed to.”
A recent transfer carried out by Project Chimps prompted the charitable donation by DentalEZ, as well as widespread national attention. Nine chimpanzees once used as research animals at the New Iberia Research Center in Louisiana were just relocated to the new Project Chimps refuge, hundreds of miles from their former home in a lab where they were used as subjects in biomedical testing.
Workers with the non-profit organization transported all nine animals and now Project Chimps sanctuary, located in Morganton, Georgia, is their new home, a sprawling preserve where over 200 chimps will eventually roam free. The 236-acre sanctuary is located along a temperate rainforest, with rolling hills and a lush, green landscape. In addition to office buildings, a full veterinary clinic, and an upscale kitchen designed by celebrity chef Rachael Ray, there are currently four "villas" that can house 10-15 chimps each, and one larger group building that can house two groups of 10-15 chimps.
“It’s a very rewarding feeling to know that we are providing the medical and dental equipment to chimps that, up to this point, have spent most if not all of their lives in a research laboratory,” continued Volk. “As a DentalEZ representative, it is important that we give back not only to the people in our community, but also to those that do not have a voice. It is our calling as dental professionals to make sure that everyone, both human and animal, are treated with the utmost care and respect.”
In 2015, all chimpanzees were designated an endangered species, marking the end of privately funded research on chimpanzees in the US. Chimps are considered the smartest primate and the closest relatives to humans, which is why the New Iberia Research Center in Louisiana has used 220 of them for medical testing.
The opening of the new Project Chimps sanctuary follows a steady shift away from controversial biomedical research on chimpanzees across the country. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) began significantly phasing out its funding of federal research on chimps in 2013, and announced the retirement of its 50 remaining chimpanzees in November 2015.
NIH also ended its research support for chimps but did not own approximately 360 remaining around the US. Now the private institutions that own them, like the New Iberia Research Center, are following suit. However, due to limited space at existing sanctuaries such as Chimp Haven in Louisiana and Save the Chimps in Florida, the creation of new refuges like Project Chimps is crucial.

Evaluation of pit-and-fissure sealants placed with four different bonding protocols: a randomized clinical trial
BackgroundApplication of adhesive after acid etching may increase the retention of pit-and-fissure sealants and improve clinical effectiveness.
AimsTo clinically evaluate the retention, marginal discoloration and caries incidence of pit-and-fissure sealants applied using four bonding protocols: conventional acid etching, etch-and-rinse adhesive, multimode universal adhesive and self-etch adhesive used after acid etching.
DesignIn this split-mouth design study, the four adhesive protocols were randomly assigned to the four erupted, non-carious first permanent molars and involved 52 patients between 6 and 10 years of age. The sealants were evaluated at 3-, 6- and 12-month intervals. Statistical analysis was carried out using Friedman test and Kruskal–Wallis test.
ResultsAt 12 months, the retention rate was maximum in etch-and-rinse and universal adhesive groups (77.1%) followed by self-etch adhesive (58.3%) and conventional acid etching group (45.8%). Dental caries was observed only in one tooth, and marginal discoloration was found to be the highest in conventional group and least in etch-and-rinse group.
ConclusionsUse of adhesives during pit-and-fissure sealant application does not significantly enhance sealant retention nor decrease marginal discoloration. Etch-and-rinse adhesive is advantageous only at short term.

According to the investigations of the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), health insurance fraud has caused an enormous pecuniary loss in the U.S. In Taiwan, in dentistry the problem is getting worse if dentists (authorized entities) file fraudulent claims. Several methods have been developed to solve health insurance fraud; however, these methods are like a rule-based mechanism. Without exploring the behavior patterns, these methods are time-consuming and ineffective; in addition, they are inadequate for managing the fraudulent dentists.
Based on social network theory, we develop an evaluation approach to solve the problem of cross-dentist fraud. The trustworthiness score of a dentist is calculated based upon the amount and type of dental operations performed on the same patient and the same tooth by that dentist and other dentists.
The simulation provides the following evidence. (1) This specific type of fraud can be identified effectively using our evaluation approach. (2) A retrospective study for the claims is also performed. (3) The proposed method is effective in identifying the fraudulent dentists.
We provide a new direction for investigating the genuineness of claims data. If the insurer can detect fraudulent dentists using the traditional method and the proposed method simultaneously, the detection will be more transparent and ultimately reduce the losses caused by fraudulent claims.

Adjunctive efficacy of probiotics in the treatment of experimental peri-implant-mucositis with mechanical and photodynamic therapy: a randomized, cross-over clinical trial.

AIM:to evaluate the adjunctive clinical efficacy of probiotics in the treatment of peri-implant mucositis (p-iM) with professionally administered plaque removal (PAPR) and photodynamic therapy (PDT).
MATERIALS AND METHODS:Following p-iM induction, patients underwent PAPR+PDT and were randomly assigned to receive the professional and home-based administration of probiotics (Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus brevis) (test treatment) or placebo preparation (control treatment) according to a cross-over design. Clinical parameters were assessed at 6 sites for each implant before as well as at 2 and 6 weeks after professional treatment administration.
RESULTS:Twenty patients contributing 1 dental implant each were included. Immediately before treatment and at 6 weeks, the median number of sites with bleeding on probing (BoP+) sites per implant unit was 4 (3-6) and 2 (0-2) (p< 0.001), respectively, for test treatment, and 3.5 (2-4) and 2 (0-3) (p= 0.03), respectively, for control treatment. No significant difference in clinical outcomes was observed between treatment groups.
CONCLUSION: The combination of PAPR and PDT either alone or associated with probiotics determined a significant reduction of the number of BoP+ sites at 2 and 6 weeks around implants with p-iM. The adjunctive use of probiotics did not significantly enhance the clinical outcomes of PAPR + PDT.

Treatment Outcomes of Mineral Trioxide Aggregate Pulpotomy in Vital Permanent Teeth with Carious Pulp Exposure: The Retrospective Study

IntroductionThis study aimed to illustrate the treatment outcomes of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) pulpotomy in vital permanent teeth with carious pulp exposure.
MethodsMTA pulpotomy was performed in 66 vital permanent teeth with carious pulp exposure including teeth with signs and symptoms of irreversible pulpitis and the presence of periapical radiolucency. Patients were assessed for clinical and radiographic outcomes by 2 examiners. The relationship between treatment outcomes and factors was analyzed by means of univariate analysis and binary logistic regression.
ResultsFifty patients (a total of 55 teeth) attended the follow-up examination. The age of the patients ranged from 7–68 years old (mean = 29 years old). For the follow-up period as far as 62 months, 48 teeth showed successful outcomes (success rate = 87.3%). Teeth with clinical signs of irreversible pulpitis and the presence of periapical radiolucency could be treated successfully by MTA pulpotomy with success rates of 84% and 76%, respectively.Three of 7 failed cases required pulpectomy after MTA pulpotomy to relieve painful pulpitis. Four other failed cases were asymptomatic, and failure was detected from radiographic examination. The relationship between treatment outcomes and treatment factors could not be detected statistically.
ConclusionsTeeth with carious pulp exposure can be treated successfully by MTA pulpotomy. Clinical signs of irreversible pulpitis and the presence of periapical radiolucency should not be considered as a contraindication for pulpotomy.

There is a need to comprehensively investigate the relationship between tooth eruption and obesity. The study aimed to investigate the relationship between erupted permanent tooth number and obesity among 12-year-old children in a population-based study.
Materials and methods
A random sample of 806 12-year-old schoolchildren in Hong Kong was recruited. Oral examinations were conducted and the eruption status of the permanent teeth was assessed. Body height, body weight, waist circumference (WC), hip circumference, and triceps skinfold thickness (TRSKF) were measured to assess the adiposity statuses [weight-height ratio (W/H) and body mass index (BMI) for general obesity; WC and waist-hip ratio (WHR) for central obesity; and TRSKF for peripheral obesity]. The relationships between erupted permanent tooth number and adiposity statuses were examined in bivariate analysis and analysis of covariance.
The response rate was 82.9% (n = 668/806). Three hundred and forty-six (50.9%) children had 28 teeth erupted. Second molars had the highest rate of noneruption (17.5–35.8%). The mean number and standard deviation (SD) of erupted permanent tooth were 26.4 (2.4). The mean value and SD were 31.1 (6.3) for W/H, 19.8 (3.7) for BMI, 70.4 (9.4) for WC, 0.82 (0.06) for WHR, and 11.8 (4.5) for TRSKF, respectively. After accounting for sociodemographic factors, analysis of covariance identified that W/H, BMI, WC, and WHR were positively associated with the number of erupted permanent teeth (P < 0.01).
Erupted permanent tooth number was positively associated with obesity (general and central) among a population-based sample of 12-year-old children in Hong Kong.
